Altius Vendor Assessment cited as best practice at international health and safety event

Selection and management of contractors was the topic for discussion at the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) technical forum at Liverpool John Moores University on 26 June 2012.

Peter Hall, Director of Risk Management for SGP Property & Facilities Management, and Deputy Chairman of IIRSM, told the audience how SGP worked with Altius Vendor Assessment to ensure competence of their contractors in the field of facilities management. He explained how the Altius service has the ability to reflect changes in standards and legislation whilst providing traceability.

Altius partnered with SGP in 2007 to develop a robust online supplier assessment and accreditation service that would reduce risk and liability throughout the supply chain while delivering commercial benefits to clients. It has delivered a step change in supplier accreditation.

Delegates at the Forum came from a wide range of organisations and industries, including the oil and energy and nuclear sectors, with one visitor coming from Nigeria.

Other speakers included Anne Mallory of Mallory Health & Safety Consultants and Shaun Davis of Biffa, who used the Olympic Delivery Authority as a high profile example of a project where the partnership approach resulted in a successful completion without any fatal accidents.

The presentations were followed by a lively panel discussion, facilitated by Dr Su Wang of IIRSM, in which delegates followed up on the themes of the presentations, especially the question of competence.
